Aim: To investigate the effectiveness of health and wellbeing services (HWS) delivered by large enterprise organisations (LEOs) to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) within their supply chain on employees’ work engagement, compared to usual HWS; and to explore SME decision makers’ willingness and capacity to purchase different types of HWS from their LEO.
What the research will involve:
The project comprises five structured work packages (WPs)
Work Package 1: Intervention co-design and preparation for the HWS intervention
Work Package 2: Implementation of the HWS intervention in SMEs within supply chain
Work Package 3: Quantitative evaluation and social return on investment analysis
Work Package 4: Process evaluation and feedback
Work Package 5: Discrete choice experiment
What has the study found so far?
The SHINE study began in December 2024. Since then, we have worked with our Large Enterprise Organisations (LEOs) to review the health and wellbeing services (HWS) that they can offer to the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their supply chain who they work with. With permission from one LEO, we have conducted a full review of their HWS and provided detailed feedback on how they could make improvements to them. We have also been working with our LEOs to identify and recruit SMEs that are eligible to participate in the study as either intervention or control sites.
We will work with each intervention arm SME and their LEO to finalise the co-design of the HWS intervention that would be appropriate for them.
We are currently finalising governance and ethical reviews on the project, with the aim of rolling out the trial in early 2026. We have been working with our Expert Stakeholder and Public Group (ESPG) to ensure that our research plans and our public facing study documents are appropriate.
